Canada brings in tens of thousands of foreign farm workers every year, and agriculture is one of the few sectors still open for low-wage LMIA hiring in 2026. When Ottawa stopped processing most low-wage LMIAs in high-unemployment cities, primary agriculture was explicitly exempted. Farms still need people to pick fruit, work in greenhouses, milk cows and pack vegetables.

What the job ads on social media rarely explain is how the system actually works. There are two main programs, with different rules about which countries can take part, how long you can stay and what your employer must pay for. Permanent residence is possible for some farm workers, but the main dedicated pathway, the Agri-Food Pilot, closed in May 2025.

This guide covers who can apply, what farm work pays, what employers must cover and the realistic routes from a farm job to staying in Canada.

The Two Main Programs

Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP)

SAWP is a government-to-government program. Only citizens of Mexico and 11 Caribbean countries can take part: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

  • Work can last up to 8 months, between January 1 and December 15.
  • Employers must offer at least 240 hours of work over 6 weeks or less.
  • It covers specific commodities such as fruit, vegetables, flowers, tobacco, dairy, poultry, sod and nursery trees.
  • Workers are recruited by their own government's labour ministry, not by private agents.

Many SAWP workers return to the same farm for years. The program is reliable but seasonal: you go home every winter.

Agricultural Stream

If you are not from a SAWP country, this is your route. The Agricultural Stream lets Canadian farms hire workers from any country through an LMIA for on-farm primary agriculture in listed commodity sectors.

  • Low-wage positions: work permits for up to 2 years.
  • High-wage positions: up to 3 years.
  • Jobs can be year-round, which matters for dairy, hog, poultry and greenhouse work.
  • The employer finds and hires you directly, or through a licensed recruiter where provinces require one.

Workers from the Philippines, Guatemala, Thailand, Vietnam, India and parts of Africa commonly come through this stream.

What Farm Workers Earn

Employers must pay the higher of the provincial minimum wage or the prevailing wage for the job and region. These figures come from Job Bank for general farm workers in harvesting (2023 to 2024 reference period).

Quebec16.6019.0025.00
Nova Scotia17.0017.2021.00

Livestock labourers earn a national median of about CAD 20 an hour, according to Job Bank, with Alberta near CAD 23. Experienced dairy and hog workers, and farm supervisors, earn more.

Ontario's general minimum wage rose to CAD 17.95 on October 1, 2026, and farm wages in SAWP contracts for most commodities follow the provincial rate. BC's rate is CAD 18.25 from June 2026.

Hours vary with the season. Harvest weeks of 50 to 60 hours are common, but a wet spring can mean short weeks. Overtime rules for farm workers differ by province and are often weaker than for other jobs, so check your contract.

In BC, SAWP employers can deduct for accommodation. For 2026, the cap is CAD 7.28 per working day (up to CAD 969.68 per season) under the Caribbean contract, and CAD 5.99 per day (up to CAD 923.82) under the Mexican contract. Some provinces allow a small daily utilities deduction.

How to Get a Farm Job in Canada

If you are from a SAWP country

  1. Contact your government's labour ministry, which runs SAWP selection. In Mexico and the Caribbean countries, workers are recruited and screened through official government channels.
  2. Complete the selection process, including a medical exam and document checks.
  3. Get matched to a Canadian employer, who has an approved LMIA.
  4. Receive your work permit at the Canadian port of entry after your application is approved.

If you are from any other country

  1. Search Job Bank for agricultural jobs. Look for postings that mention foreign worker eligibility. Job Bank is the official federal job site.
  2. Apply directly to farms with a CV that shows real farm, greenhouse or livestock experience.
  3. Wait for the employer's LMIA. The employer applies to Service Canada and must show it tried to hire locally.
  4. Apply for your work permit once you receive the job offer and positive LMIA. Include your contract, LMIA number and identity documents.
  5. Give biometrics and a medical exam if requested.

Some provinces require recruiters to be licensed. If someone claims to be recruiting for a Canadian farm, check their licence with the provincial authority and verify the employer independently.

Documents Checklist

  • Valid passport (ideally valid for longer than your contract)
  • Signed employment contract showing wage, hours, housing and deductions
  • Copy of the positive LMIA (Agricultural Stream)
  • Proof of farm experience: reference letters, photos, certificates
  • Police certificates if requested
  • Medical exam results if requested
  • Biometrics receipt

Can Farm Work Lead to Permanent Residence?

This is where expectations need to be realistic.

SAWP: no direct route

SAWP is designed to be seasonal. Workers return home each year, and the program has no built-in path to PR.

The Agri-Food Pilot has closed

The Agri-Food Pilot, which gave PR to non-seasonal workers in meat processing, mushroom and greenhouse production, and livestock, reached its cap in February 2025 and ended on May 14, 2025. IRCC is still processing applications it accepted before that date but takes no new ones.

Routes that still exist

  • Provincial nominee programs. Some provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, have streams or draws that can include agriculture workers with long-term job offers. Requirements vary. See our PNP guide.
  • Rural Community Immigration Pilot. Designated employers in some rural communities hire in agriculture, and the pilot accepts TEER 4 and 5 jobs with CLB 4 language scores. Read our rural pilots guide.
  • Express Entry for supervisors. Agricultural service contractors, farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers (NOC 82030) are TEER 2, which can qualify under the Federal Skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class.
  • Atlantic Immigration Program. Farms and fish processors in the Atlantic provinces can hire through AIP if they are designated.

Most PR routes need a full-time, non-seasonal job, language test results and some education. Year-round dairy, hog, poultry and greenhouse jobs are much better stepping stones than harvest-only work.

Common Mistakes

  • Paying an agent. This is the number one way farm workers lose money.
  • Not reading the contract. Check the hourly wage, housing deductions, guaranteed hours and who pays for transport.
  • Overstaying. Leaving the farm or staying after your permit ends can ruin future applications.
  • Assuming PR is automatic. It is not. Plan your PR route from day one if you want to stay.
  • Ignoring your rights. Temporary foreign workers have the same workplace protections as Canadians. You can report abuse confidentially to Service Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nigerians, Indians or Filipinos join SAWP?

No. SAWP is only for citizens of Mexico and 11 Caribbean countries. Workers from other countries can come through the Agricultural Stream with an employer's LMIA.

Do Canadian farms provide free housing?

SAWP housing is free in most provinces, but BC employers can deduct a capped daily amount. In the Agricultural Stream, employers can deduct up to CAD 30 a week for on-farm housing unless provincial rules set a lower amount.

How much can I save working on a Canadian farm?

It depends on hours and deductions. At CAD 18 an hour and 50 hours a week, gross pay is around CAD 3,600 a month before tax. With free or cheap housing, many workers save a large share, but food, phone and money transfers add up.

Can my family come with me on a farm work permit?

Spouses of workers in TEER 4 and 5 jobs are generally not eligible for open work permits unless the worker is on a recognised pathway to PR. Most farm workers come alone.

Is the Agri-Food Pilot still open?

No. It closed on May 14, 2025, after filling its spaces in February 2025. There was no direct replacement announced as of 2026.

Can I switch from a farm job to another job?

Only with a new work permit, which usually needs a new employer with its own LMIA or an exemption. You cannot simply leave the farm and start another job.

Before You Apply

  1. Search Job Bank for agricultural postings and note which farms hire foreign workers year-round.
  2. Collect reference letters proving your farm or livestock experience.
  3. Never pay a recruiter. Verify every employer through official sources.
  4. If you want to stay long term, target non-seasonal jobs and start preparing a language test early.
